How much will I save?
Dental treatment in Mexico costs a fraction of what it costs in the
USA. Certain procedures, such as full-mouth X-rays, can cost up to 90%
less.
Why are dental costs in Mexico so reasonable?
A dentist's education costs less in Mexico than in the United States.
Cost of living, taxes, overheads and rents are lower in Mexico. Most
supplies cost less in Mexico. The exact same medications can sell for
up to 90% less than US prices, due to trade agreements between various
countries. Some of the dentists have their own onsite laboratories,
which saves time and money, but even independent labs' fees are lower
than in the USA.
Are the dentists as qualified as US dentists?
To be a dentist in Mexico requires 4-5 years of university study and
one year of community service. Their education is similar to the US and
Canada, and they even use some of the same textbooks in English. The
dentists you will see in Querétaro have been recommended by the state's
Dental Association for their expertise.
Do I have to be able to speak Spanish?
The dentists and/or their staff will have some knowledge of English,
since English was probably a requirement in their education. However,
Querétaro has been off the beaten path of American tourism, so their
English may be a little rusty at first. Some basic knowledge of Spanish
dental terms and restaurant menu items will be a great help to you. A
Spanish-English phrase-book or dictionary is recommended if you don't
speak Spanish and our agent will be on hand between your appointments
to help you.
Can I get a guarantee for my dental treatment?
As with any medical and dental procedures anywhere, even in the USA,
there are no guarantees, other than that the professionals you see will
treat you to the best of their considerable abilities. Be aware that
legal recourse will be very limited for any malpractice.
What if my treatment takes longer than 9 days?
We advise that you get a treatment plan from a dentist in the USA
before you book your Dentours trip, so that you have an idea of how
long your treatment may take. You may not be able to have all your work
done in one trip unless you extend your stay, which our agent will be
happy to help you with. Certain treatments, such as dental implants,
require healing periods of up to several months between preparation and
completion. For other work, you might plan on an extended stay in
Querétaro and have all your work done, or plan to book another Dentours
trip.
Is Mexican dentistry as advanced as in the USA?
Mexican dentists use the same or better equipment, materials and
methods as American dentists. The dentists you will be seeing are at
the top of their profession in Querétaro and they stay apprised of the
latest techniques, using technology and materials from Europe, Canada
and the USA.
Do I need a passport to enter Mexico?
As of late 2007, Americans need a passport to enter Mexico. Check with
www.tsa.dhs.gov for updates before departure and apply for your
passport well in advance, if you need a new one. You are responsible
for having the required documents for your journey. Travelers from
other countries should also find out what documents they need.
Are additional documents required for persons under 18 years?
Because there have been so many cases of child abduction by estranged
parents, the U.S. and Mexican laws are quite stringent on children
traveling alone or with only one parent. If a minor child is traveling
with only one parent, the absent parent must provide notarized consent.
If only one parent has legal custody, that parent must provide such
evidence to airlines and Mexican authorities. In cases in which a minor
child is traveling to Mexico alone or in someone else's company, then
both parents (or the sole documented custodial parent) must provide
notarized consent. If a child traveling to Mexico has a different last
name from the mother and/or father, the parents must provide evidence
to airlines and Mexican authorities, such as a birth certificate or
adoption decree, that they are indeed the parents. These documents will
be needed before you are issued a boarding pass in the USA.
Do you book air travel?
Dentours does not book flights for you, giving you the greatest
opportunity to find bargains. We recommend that you book online or
through your local travel agent. In Querétaro, our agent will direct
you to a travel agent and assist with your return booking, if necessary.
Can I book an open-ended ticket?
Open-ended tickets are expensive and impossible to find online. Since
Mexico allows Americans to enter the country without a round-trip
ticket, it is possible to book your return flight separately. If you
want or need to extend your stay, it may be worthwhile booking a
round-trip ticket for at a low rate, with a date up to a year away,
then change the return date from Mexico when you are ready to return.
You will pay a penalty for this, perhaps $75-$150, but the extra
expense may be worth the flexibility, especially since you're saving so
much money by going on a Dentours trip!
What should I take with me?
Dental:
We recommend that you take a copy of your dental treatment plan, a
full-mouth X-ray (which can also be obtained in Querétaro at about a
fraction of the cost).
Clothing:
Querétaro's climate is mild, with temperatures rarely going above the
80s and with cool nights in the 40s and 50s. View weather averages here.
A jacket, sweater or shawl will keep you comfortable in the evenings.
Deluxe Hotel Package clients should bring a casually dressy outfit for
dinner in the hotel. Some of Querétaro's streets are cobbled and some
sidewalks are in need of repair, so good walking shoes are advisable if
you are at all unsteady or need ankle support. Otherwise, casual,
comfortable clothes are fine. Although the deluxe hotels will do
laundry for you, you may want to wash small items in your room, in
which case you will find that in Querétaro's high-altitude dry air
everything dries overnight. If your standard hotel does not have
laundry service, there are laundries around town that will wash and dry
your clothes for about US$1.40 per kilo (2.2 lbs).
What payment method can I use for my dental bill?
The preferred method of payment for all business in Querétaro is cash,
but the dentists will accept travelers checks and credit cards. Cash
can be obtained from ATM machines throughout the city.
Can I use my cell phone in Mexico?
If your cell phone is a GSM model with the 1900 mHz band, you can use
it in Mexico. If your phone is locked you can only use it with your
provider (e.g. AT&T, Verizon), which means you will pay hefty
roaming charges, unless the provider has a discount plan for Mexico.
You might want to unlock your GSM phone so that
you can sign up with a Mexican cellphone company. Search online for
cell phone unlocking sites, which may be able to email you a code to
unlock your phone so that, once you are in Mexico, you can buy a
prepaid SIM card (available at many kiosks and stores) and insert it
into your phone for use over a Mexican network. Or you can buy a SIM
card for Mexico on the Internet. It's also possible to buy or rent a
Mexican cell phone, but we have no idea if that is more economical.
Again, search the Internet for more detailed
information than we can give here if you want to use a cell phone while
on your Dentours trip. A good general tutorial on international mobile
phones can be found here
. Another and perhaps simpler alternative to taking a cell phone is to
buy prepaid international calling cards at many stores and kiosks in
Querétaro that can be used on just about every public phone in Mexico.
You will be asked if it's for cellular or public phone, if it's for
domestic or international calls and you will be offered a selection of
denominations.
